The Board of Trustees of The Mark Twain House & Museum have named Jeffrey L. Nichols the Executive Director, effective April 1, 2008.
Mr. Nichols joined the Mark Twain House & Museum in 2001 from The Barnum Museum in Bridgeport as the School Program Coordinator. He later went on to become the Director of Education. Prior to becoming Executive Director, he was Acting Director and also served as Deputy Director in 2007.
Since he joined The Mark Twain House & Museum as School Program Coordinator in 2001, the museum has seen its school visitation double and now welcomes more than 12,000 students. Mr. Nichols laid the groundwork for 4 National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) workshops that have brought in more than 300 teachers from 29 states to the museum for intensive week-long workshops.
He holds a M.S. in Museum Education from Bank Street College of Education in New York City and a B.A. in American History from Southern Connecticut State University. He is currently enrolled in the EMBA program at the University of New Haven. Mr. Nichols is also a graduate of the Seminar for Historical Administration Program (SHA) of the American Association for State and Local History. SHA is an intensive three-week program that provides unsurpassed opportunities for history professionals to attend workshops, field trips, and engage in discussions on essential topics, best practices, and case studies with more than thirty expert practitioners and teachers from leading history and cultural organizations in the U.S.
He currently resides in Milford with his wife Laura, who is the Assistant Director & Curator of the Lockwood Matthews Mansion Museum in Norwalk, CT.
