Holiday Tours
Christmas is a special time at The Mark Twain House & Museum. Join us with your group during the holiday season to be a part of a Victorian Holiday.
Throughout this joyful season, Twain's 19-room, Tiffany-decorated mansion is adorned as it was for holiday celebrations from 1874 to 1891, when the author, his wife and three daughters lived in the house.
Visitors will get the feeling that they have stepped back into time and have walked into
Mark Twain's home on Christmas day. Both adults and children can find the subtle reminders of Christmas past throughout the house. The curatorial staff of The Mark Twain House has extensively researched the holiday season during the time period when Twain lived in Hartford with his family to give its visitors a true representation of the late 1800's and the Clemens family.
Throughout the house there are baskets overflowing with gifts, as prepared by Mrs. Clemens, which were brought to friends and neighbors. The dining room table is set for a traditional Christmas dinner and the smell of holiday cookies fills the air. In the entry hall, a "kissing ball" of mistletoe dangles overhead, and the home's massive staircase is wreathed in garlands and ribbons. Greenery adorns the many doorways on the first floor as well as the mantles throughout the house. Gifts in various stages of wrapping are placed in bedrooms and the children's schoolroom.
Many groups return year after year so to not be disappointed make your reservations early!
